When it comes to cloth diapering, wool diaper covers stand out as a unique and highly effective option. They are beloved by many parents for their natural properties, breathability, and eco-friendliness. In this blog post, we'll explore the benefits of wool diaper covers, the different styles available, where to shop for them, and how to care for these special garments. If you’re embarking on a journey of starting cloth diapering and are looking to only utilize natural fiber this is a great option and I’m happy to share what I’ve learned.

Before we start I want to say, I understand wool diaper covers can be intimidating. I was too scared to try wool for the longest time, so I just want to say- it’s easier than you may be thinking. That being said, I am also not a pro and have made some mistakes. Learn from me and give it a shot, even if it’s just for overnight (like me) it’s definitely worth having at least one or two covers in your stash.

Benefits of Wool Diaper Covers

1. Natural and Eco-Friendly

Wool is a natural fiber, making it an eco-friendly choice for diaper covers. Unlike synthetic materials that require significant energy and chemical processes to produce, wool comes from sheep and is renewable and biodegradable. The process of obtaining wool involves shearing sheep, which is necessary for their health and does not harm them. Additionally, wool decomposes naturally, reducing waste and environmental impact. Choosing wool over synthetic options supports sustainable farming practices and reduces your carbon footprint.

2. Breathability

Wool is known for its exceptional breathability, which helps maintain a comfortable temperature for your baby. Wool fibers have a unique structure with microscopic air pockets that allow air to circulate freely, preventing heat and moisture buildup. This breathability is particularly beneficial for preventing diaper rash, as it keeps your baby's skin dry and cool. In hot weather, wool helps to release heat, while in cold weather, it provides insulation, maintaining a balanced microclimate around your baby's skin.

3. Absorbency and Moisture Wicking

Wool can absorb a significant amount of moisture without feeling wet, thanks to its natural structure. Wool fibers can hold up to 30% of their weight in moisture while still feeling dry to the touch. This property is crucial for diaper covers, as it helps keep your baby's skin dry and comfortable. The moisture-wicking ability of wool draws moisture away from the skin and into the absorbent layers beneath, reducing the risk of diaper rash and irritation. Wool's ability to manage moisture also means fewer leaks and longer-lasting dryness, making it ideal for overnight use.

4. Temperature Regulation

One of the standout features of wool is its ability to regulate temperature naturally. Wool fibers act as insulators, trapping heat in cold weather and releasing excess heat in warm weather. This property makes wool diaper covers suitable for all seasons, providing comfort and protection year-round. In winter, wool keeps your baby warm by retaining body heat, while in summer, it allows for ventilation and cooling. This natural temperature regulation ensures that your baby stays comfortable regardless of the external conditions.

5. Antimicrobial Properties

Wool has inherent antimicrobial properties that help resist the growth of bacteria and odors. The lanolin present in wool acts as a natural barrier against bacteria, making wool covers more hygienic and reducing the frequency of washing. This antimicrobial property is especially beneficial for diaper covers, as it helps keep them fresh and odor-free even after extended use. The ability of wool to resist bacteria and odors also contributes to a healthier diapering environment, minimizing the risk of infections and skin irritations for your baby.

How to Wash and Lanolize Wool Diaper Covers

Proper care is essential to maintain the effectiveness and longevity of wool diaper covers. Here’s how to wash and lanolize them:

Washing Wool Diaper Covers

  1. Spot Clean When Possible: Wool has self-cleaning properties, so you don’t need to wash it frequently. Spot clean any small messes with a damp cloth.

  2. Hand Wash: Fill a basin with lukewarm water and add a small amount of gentle wool detergent. Avoid hot water as it can cause the wool to shrink.

  3. Soak and Gently Agitate: Submerge the cover and gently agitate it in the water. Let it soak for about 15 minutes.

  4. Rinse: Rinse the cover in lukewarm water until all the detergent is gone.

  5. Press Out Water: Press (don’t wring) the water out of the cover. You can roll it in a towel to remove excess moisture.

  6. Air Dry: Hang dry or flat lay until fully dry, this can take several hours even up to a full day or two.

Some options are machine washable, follow the label care instructions provided by the maker.

Lanolizing Wool Diaper Covers

Lanolizing helps restore the natural lanolin in wool, which is essential for its water-resistant properties.

  1. Melt Lanolin: Dissolve a spoonful amount of lanolin in hot water. Add a few drops of baby shampoo or 1-2 emulsion cubes to help emulsify the lanolin. Shake in a mason jar or stir till milky white and remove emulsion cubes.

  2. Add to Cool Water: Pour the lanolin mixture into a basin of lukewarm water and mix well.

  3. Soak the Cover: Submerge the wool cover in the lanolin solution, flip inside out and let it soak for if desired for 5-20 minutes, or overnight for extra protection.

  4. Rinse: Rinse in cool water to remove excess soap.

  5. Gently Press Out Water: Press out excess water and lay the cover flat or hang to dry.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

Even with proper care, you might encounter some common issues with wool diaper covers. Here are some tips for troubleshooting:

1. Leakage

  • Insufficient Lanolizing: If the cover is leaking, it may need to be lanolized again. Ensure you’re using enough lanolin and allowing the cover to soak for the recommended time. You could also try a lanolin spray to add additional lanolin to targeted areas.

  • Improper Fit: Check that the cover fits your baby snugly without gaps around the legs and waist.

  • Overwhelmed Absorbent Layer: If the absorbent diaper underneath is completely saturated, it may be time for a diaper change or to use a more absorbent option, especially overnight.

2. Odor

  • Inadequate Cleaning: Ensure the cover is thoroughly rinsed after washing to remove all detergent residues. Use a strong detergent such as Unicorn Baby Beyond Clean

  • Extended Use: Wool covers can go a few weeks without washing, but if they start to smell, it's time for a wash and lanolize.

3. Stiffness

  • Detergent Build-Up: Use a gentle, wool-safe detergent to avoid build-up that can make the wool stiff.

  • Improper Drying: Avoid direct sunlight and high heat. Lay the cover flat to dry to maintain its softness.

  • Fabric Softener: Typically a no-no when it comes to cloth diapers but there is one that is often recommended in special circumstances and thats the Unicorn Baby Beyond Soft.

4. Shrinkage

  • Hot Water and Agitation: Always use lukewarm water and gently agitate the cover. Avoid hot water and excessive rubbing, which can cause the wool to shrink.

  • Conditioner Hack: If you experience shrinkage try soaking the cover in some lukewarm water and hair conditioner, while wet gently pull on the material to expand it. Rinse, wash and lanolize as normal.

5. Pilling

  • Normal Wear and Tear: Pilling is a natural part of wool’s wear and doesn’t affect its functionality. You can gently remove pills with a fabric shaver or sweater comb.

Wool diaper covers are a fantastic choice for eco-conscious parents looking for a natural, breathable, and effective diapering solution. With various styles to choose from and proper care, wool covers can provide excellent protection and comfort for your baby. By troubleshooting common issues, you can ensure your wool covers remain in great condition and continue to serve your baby well. Happy diapering!
